Apparently, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there has been an increase in the number of new vans registered here in the UK in the 6 months to 30th June 2021 due in part to both increased interest from delivery businesses presumably to cope with a rise in the volume of online sales and interest from the construction industry.

In the 6 months to June 2021, there were 191,513 new vans registered here in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category compared with 108,876 for the same period in 2020. That amounts to a rise of 82,637 that equates to an increase of 75.9% – a very large rise. The pandemic will no doubt have had some bearing on both sets of figures.

Looking at those figures in a little more detail, there were 24,461 new pickups bought in the 6 months to June 2021 compared to 14,095 for the same period last year – a rise of 73.5%. There were 2,269 new 4 x 4s bought in the 6 months to June 2021 compared to only 635 for the same period in 2020 – a rise of 257.3%. There were 9,629 new vans in the up to 2 tonnes category registered in the 6 months to June 2021 compared to 7,060 for the same period last year – a rise of 36.4%. There were 26,659 new vans purchased in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category in the 6 months to June 2021 compared with 18,757 for the same period last year – an increase of 42.1%. There were 128,495 new vans in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category purchased in the 6 months to June 2021 compared to 68,329 for the same period in 2020 – an extremely large rise of 88.1%.

In June 2021, there were 34,363 new vans registered in the up to 3.5 tonnes category compared with 30,041 for the same month in 2020 – a rise of 14.4%.
