According to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was an increase in the number of new vans sold here in the UK in July 2020. This is pleasing news considering the impact that COVID-19 has had on the motor trade industry.
In July 2020, the number of new vans registered in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 27,701 whereas in July 2019 the figure was 25,862. This is a difference of 1,839 that equates to a rise of 7.1%.
However, on a year to date basis to July 2020, the figures do not make for good reading. The number of new vans registered in this period in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 136,577 compared to 222,280 for the same period to July 2019. This is a difference of 85,703 that equates to a drop of 38,6%.
The top 5 selling vans in July 2020 were: –
1. Ford Transit Custom 3,405
2. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2,581
3. Ford Transit 1,785
4. Volkswagen Transporter 1,545
5. Vauxhall Vivaro 1,381
As we have mentioned above, the motor trade industry has being going through very difficult times over the last few months with so may retails outlets being closed due to the pandemic. As more and more vehicle retail sales outlets open it is to be hoped that we continue to see a continued increase in the number of new vans being sold here in the UK. One would expect that as new van sales go up then there should hopefully be an increase in the number of second hand vans that exchange hands.
