Due in part to the supply problems with semiconductors that is a worldwide problem, the number of new light commercial vehicle registrations dropped by a huge 27.6% in March 2022 when compared with the same month last year here in the UK.
The number of new vans sold in March 2022 in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 40,613 according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) whereas in March 2021 the figure was 56,122 – a significant reduction of 27.6% There were 4,457 new pickups sold in March 2022 compared to 8.633 in March last year – a fall of 48.4%. The number of new 4 x 4s sold totalled 446 in March 2022 compared to 669 in March 2021 – a drop of 33.3%. The number of new vans sold in the up to 2 tonnes category amounted to 903 in March 2022 compared to 3,089 in March 2021 – a large drop of 70.8%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category totalled 5,577 compared to 7,699 in March 2021 – a fall of 27.6%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 29,230 in March 2022 compared to 36,032 in March 2021 – a reduction of 18.9%.
On a year to date basis to March 2022, the number of new vans registered in the UK in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 74,344 compared to 97,356 for the same period to March 2021 – a fall of 23.6%.
However it is interesting that the number of new battery electric vans (BEV) registered on a year to date basis to March 2022 amounted to 4,297 compared to 2,544 in March 2021 – a rise of 68.9%.
It is to be hoped that an improvement is seen in these figures here in the UK in the coming months.
