The number of new vans registered here in the UK in October 2020 increased in comparison to the same month last year according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This news will no doubt be welcomed by those involved in the sale of such vehicles.

The number of new vans up to 3.5 tonnes sold amounted to 28,753 in October 2020 whereas in October 2019 the figure was 25,373. That is an increase of 13.3%.

Looking at these figures in a little more detail, the number of new pickups sold in October 2020 totalled 2,211 compared to 3,241 in October 2019. That is a fall of 31.8%. The number of new 4x4s sold totalled 150 in October this year compared to 226 in October 2019 – a fall of 33.6%. The number of new vans sold in the up to 2.0 tonnes category amounted to 1,418 in October 2020 compared to 1,396 in October 2019 – a rise of 1.6%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category amounted to 4,482 in October 2020 compared to 4,355 in October 2019 – a rise of 2.9%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 20,492 in October 2020 compared to 16,155 in October 2019 – a rise of 26.8%.

On a year to date basis to October 2020, the number of new vans registered up to 3.5 tonnes amounted to 236,833 compared to 311,989 for the same period to October 2019. That is a large drop of 24.1%.

When you consider that we are still in the pandemic that is having an impact around the world it is pleasing to see the number of new vans sold in October 2020 rose in comparison to the same month last year.
