It is good to read that, despite the many problems posed by the pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of new vans sold here in the UK for the month of November. What is more pleasing is that this is the third month in a row that the number of new vans registered has gone up.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), in November 2020 the number of new vans registered that fell in to the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 28,541 compared to a figure of 26,238 in November of last year. That is a rise of 2,303 that equates to an increase of 8.8%.

The number of new pickups sold in November 2020 totalled 1,989 whereas in the same month last year the figure was 4,541 – a drop of 56.2%. The number of new 4x4s sold totalled 148 compared to 149 – a drop of 0.7%. The number of new vans sold in the up to 2.0 tonnes category totalled 1,692 compared to 1,488 – a rise of 13.7%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.0 to 2.5 tonnes category amounted to 3,943 compared to 3.472 – a rise of 13.6%. The number of new vans sold in the 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 20,769 compared to 16,588 – a rise of 25.2%.

However, on a year to date basis to November 2020, the number of new vans registered in the up to 3.5 tonnes category amounted to 265,374 whereas for the same period last year the figure was much higher at 338,227 – a drop of 21.5%.

It is interesting to read that the number of various types of electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) has also increased significantly between November 2019 and November 2020 – a rise of over 79%.
